Hi, I'm Robin and this is my Mom, Dad, and kids. To me, my family is everything. My Mom and Dad passed a little over a year ago but I was lucky enough to help and care for them their last four years. Beautiful memories that we will cherish forever. A little bit about me. I have been a Registered Nurse for 28 years now. Wow, time flies. The idea of my business, Your-Nurse-Advocate evolved because I lost my mother-in-law to a medical error in the year 2000. I was pregnant at the time with my son, I was a new nurse, my parents-in-law would not transfer hospitals (they trusted that they were getting the best care) and my spouse's voice about his concerns for his Mom went unanswered. I spoke with the surgeon that morning and she reassured me that everything would be okay. Well it absolutely wasn't, my mother-in-law died immediately in the operating room from Septic Shock caused from a small bowel obstruction. "Sepsis kills over 350,000 people in the United States each year, as reported by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences. Sepsis is a leading cause of death in hospitals." The World Health Organization reported "in 2020, there were 11 million sepsis-related deaths worldwide."
Everything changed that day I lost my mother-in-law and I made a promise to myself that I would learn, further my education, and ensure that I would advocate for my patients as best as I could possibly do. The Key was to Speak Up and to educate my patients so that they can make an informed decision about their healthcare options. I enrolled in multiple educational programs over the years, learning as much as I could. I completed my Bachelor's of Nursing at Framingham State University, I attended the nurse practitioner program at Regis College, the legal nurse consultant program at Northeastern University and the Independent Registered Nurse Patient Advocate program through the University of Arizona, Tucson.
My education and experiences have made me into the nurse I am today. I have saved people's lives, I have held people's hands while they die with dignity, I have provided people with educational resources that have allowed them to be Informed and Empowered about their medical decisions. I have taught people about the importance of asking questions and speaking up. Our healthcare system is difficult to navigate. It is a complex maze. Having a private patient advocate at your side is a step in the right direction. It allows for an educated, informed patient to collaborate with their medical team and understand the complexities of their disease or treatment recommendations.
